understanding carbon

Introduction to Australian carbon project methods

The market for ACCUs comprises a wide range of activities which either remove or avoid the emission of CO2.

Eureka Carbon is principally focused on the Environmental Plantings & Human Induced Regeneration methods.

Method NameCredit TypeTypical Activity
Environmental
Plantings (EP)
Carbon
Removal
Planting native species (either Mallee or endemic vegetation communities)
on land that has been cleared for a minimum of 5 years.
Human-induced
Regeneration (HIR)
Carbon
Removal
Promoting the regrowth of native vegetation by undertaking one or more of the following: Reducing stocking
pressure through active management, de-stocking or improving infrastructure, ceasing clearing activities and/or managing grazing pressure from wild animals.
Avoided Deforestation
(AD)
Carbon
Avoidance
For native forest that was intended to be cleared, not undertaking the clearing activity and waiving any future
right to clear the land.
Soil Carbon (Soil)Carbon
Removal
Active management of soil health through cover crops, change in management practice or grazing systems to
sequester soil carbon.
Savannah Burning
(Savannah)
Carbon
Avoidance
Early season burning in tropical zones where fuel load is low to prevent late season fires which are more severe
and have a much larger emissions profile. Projects are credited for the difference in emissions between the
prescribed burn and the estimated emissions from a late season burn.
Landfill Gas (LFG) and
Other
Carbon
Avoidance
Range of methods covered here include upgrades to equipment and infrastructure to improve energy efficiency
and reduce emissions. The main project method is landfill gas where gas is collected from landfill sites and flared
or stored for energy production.
